The original Chemex pour over drip coffee maker was designed in the 1940s for Pyrex by Dr. Peter Schlumbohm, and one of these is on display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Made of machine blown glass, this classic Chemex stands 9-1/4 inches high by 5-1/4" diameter at the top and uses cone shape filters. The bottom of the carafe is marked with a raised X symbol, dating it to the 1980s or 1990s. Newer (genuine) ones have a white Chemex stamped mark on the bottom. Fakes are being sold on Amazon with no markings.
There is a glass button on the front and a deep groove extending from the pour spout to the bottom of the 2-piece wooden neck collar. A piece of leather lacing tied with a wooden ball holds the blond wood neck band in place. The glass is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, flakes, or cloudiness. A very classy coffee carafe for use or display.
