This beautiful vintage wood jewelry box chest has lacquered top and door panels with gold gilt Asian landscape decoration and carved soapstone man and woman figures. The chest is 11 inches high, 15-1/2 inches long, and 10" deep front to back. Under the lid is a carved rail shelf, behind which is a red velour-lined 8-section jewelry storage area including two padded ring holders. The lid has a mirror at the center with ruffled pockets and necklace hooks at either side. Below the shelf are four roomy 7 by 9 by 1-1/2 inch drawers.
The box has engraved brass hardware - side handles, hinges, and clasp. There's a brass box lock with no key. The little nails or brads of the lower clasp back have been removed to enable opening of the doors in front (they were saved in one of the drawers). I purchased a similar brass latch in the exact same size as the original (last photo), but the lower half needs to be cut into two pieces for the doors. The new latch will be included with shipment. Even better of course is if you have or can find a key to the lock. There are some small scuffs and nicks to the wood. There are no marks as to maker or origin, but the chest was likely made in Mid Century China. The cup in one of the photos isn't random, it's to give an idea of the size.
