Antimacassars or chair doilies were used in Victorian times to keep oiled hair (Macassar oil was the most popular type) from staining upholstery. Chair doilies remained popular until after World War II, though men used hair oil into the 1950s - early 1960s.

This hand crocheted antimacassar or chair doily set consists of dimensional, layered pink roses surrounded by mint green leaves, done in cotton thread. The large chair back piece is 26 inches wide across the top from leaf tip to tip by about 13-1/2 inches long at the center. The two smaller arm pieces are about 14 by 6 inches. One rose is detached from one of its leaves on one side. Leave it as is (it's still attached at 2 other points) or make a quick stitch with needle and thread to re-secure. No tears, stains, or pulls.
